In the world of mentorship, few stories are as inspiring as that of Jesse Robb, our 2024 Mentor of the Year at America’s Car-Mart. As the General Manager of America’s Car-Mart in Bowling Green, Ky., Jesse has positively influenced the lives of over 100 associates, sometimes dedicating up to 30 percent of his day to guide and uplift them.
Jesse started his Car-Mart journey at 21 and was once a mentee himself. So, he knows firsthand the power of mentorship. Today, he is a key resource for Car-Mart’s knowledge and experience. He treats his mentees like family, fostering their growth and cheering them on as they strive to be the best they can be. What sets Jesse apart is the joy he feels when his mentees become go-to sources themselves, a testament to his influence.
Enjoy and see what Jesse says about mentoring.
On what defines a good mentor
“At its core, mentoring is caring about people. Everyone has a unique perspective, so mentoring is about getting your mentees to tap into their skills to get where they need to go. I draw from my experience to guide and support people so they can take the necessary steps toward success.”
On the importance of mentoring at Car-Mart
“At Car-Mart, we understand our collective responsibility is cultivating the next wave of leaders. Our annual Mentor of the Year Award recognizes those who succeed in their respective roles and invest in their peers and subordinates. Establishing a solid mentorship system is crucial for nurturing future leaders, and teaching one person how to teach another is vital. By doing so, we create a cycle of growth that benefits the entire organization.
As part of our company’s mission, we are here to support each other in personal and professional growth. This philosophy underpins our commitment to mentorship within Car-Mart.”
Jesse’s mentoring style and influence
“My mentoring style has evolved as I have grown in my career and person. My style adapts based on the individual needs of the mentee. A role model style is the place to start—leading by example. Coaching has always been my go-to, allowing me to step back and facilitate discussions. I check in regularly with my mentees, working together to address their challenges.
A mentoring relationship never truly ends. Many of my former mentees continue to reach out to me, whether to seek advice on current issues or to catch up as colleagues. Ultimately, mentoring fosters lasting relationships that are truly wonderful.”
On tips and characteristics of successful mentoring
“Passion. Confidence. Ability to be humble. Let people do it their way and figure it out. Put your ego aside. Sometimes, shut up and listen. Plus, you can’t be a good mentor without being a good communicator. Good communication is key. People want feedback. They need to know if they’re doing good or bad. You must understand that your mentees are looking to you for guidance. Show them how and help make it easier for them.
In the past, my style was focused on the end result. I worked on perfecting myself. Now, I’m more concerned about helping others. I’m less worried about making a mistake. I want to help others avoid mistakes. I’ve become more approachable and available, which are key characteristics of a good mentor. I’m also better now at giving feedback.
I have a strong desire to see people grow and improve their lives. It’s rewarding to step back and watch mentees become the go-to people in their roles.
On the personal significance of being a mentor
“Being a mentor is important because I want to see our company succeed. I want to see our people succeed. People will leave an organization when they feel undervalued; as mentors, we must step in and guide them toward the right actions.
We advance individual careers through mentorship and contribute to Car-Mart’s overall success. Mentoring involves investing in one another’s potential and creating a positive, impactful culture.
I enjoy watching my mentees succeed and witness their personal growth. It’s essential to care about others and support their achievements. Keeping what you have to yourself doesn’t improve the world; sharing and helping others can make a difference.”
