Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Plus, ghosts, witches, goblins, princesses and cowboys. Halloween means lots of kids and cars in the neighborhood. Excited kids in dark costumes will hit the streets to trick-or-treat and they may just forget to look before crossing.
Kids won’t be looking out for you, so look out for them. Bring your patience and take extra care while driving. Be safe on Halloween and follow these six safe driving tips:
1. Stay alert
Be extra vigilant and keep your eyes on your surroundings. Watch for kids darting across the roads. If there’s one child, there’s probably more right behind.
2. Drive slowly – slower than usual
When driving in a neighborhood full of trick-or-treaters, it’s a good idea to drive below the speed limit. Be ready for a quick stop.
3. Go hands-free – no cell phones
Save the texting, talking and selfie taking for later so you can keep your eyes on the road.
4. Keep your headlights on
Make sure your car can be seen, even if it isn’t dark yet.
5. Watch for parked cars
Don’t pass a stopped vehicle as kids may be getting out of the vehicle and may wander into the street.
6. Use extra caution when parking and backing your car
In fact, park where you won’t have to back up. Also, use your turn signals, and turn on your hazard lights when parked.
Also, when driving trick-or-treaters from door to door, make sure they’re buckled up. Check them before you take off each time – buckled in and car doors closed. Inform them it’s only okay to leave the car when you say it’s okay. And, it’s best if they get in and out of the car on the side closest to the sidewalk.
